Rainbow

This is a story about Megan Muir from Sydney, B.C. I was telling stories at Deep Cove School in Sydney, BC. The last thing I did was ask who wanted to be in a new story. The Kindergarten was sitting right in front of me and a kid with red hair stuck up her hand, so I asked her to come up and stand on the chair in front of the stage so that she could talk to me. I said to this kid “What sort of story would you like?” Now you have to get this. She had very red hair and she was standing on the chair with the sunshine corning in behind her so it looked like she had this red halo. She whispered in my ear "I want a story about a rainbow". Suddenly it stuck me: Of all the things kids send pictures of, a rainbow is the most common thing after pictures of themselves AND it had rained for 81 straight days that winter in Sidney. So I made up a rainbow story.

At the beginning of the Winter, after a long, long time of sunshine, it started to rain.

“Don’t worry” said Megan’s mother, “It always starts raining”.

While it rained for one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten days and Megan said “This has been raining a lot of while, and I want it to stop raining”.

“Don’t worry” said the Mom, “It always stops raining.”

Then it rained for ten more days. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten.

“It has been raining for a lot of a lot of while” said Megan, “and I want it to stop. I want it to stop right now. If it keeps raining like this the whole world is going to fill up with water.”

“Nonsense” said the Mother. “This has been a long rain, but it always stops raining. Don’t worry”.

Then it rained for twenty more days. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, TWENTY!

Megan said “It’s been raining for forty days and forty nights and it never stopped once and this has been a horrible rain and I want it to stop. I want to move to a desert. I want to be someplace where there is sunshine. I am going CRAZY”.

“Now look” said Megan’s mother, “I know it has been a very long rain, but it rains a lot here and if there wasn’t rain it wouldn’t be green and if there wasn’t rain you wouldn’t have fish”.

“HA!” said Megan, “I am not a fish!”

Megan went up to her room, crawled under her bed and tried to take a long nap. Maybe it would stop raining when she woke up.

When she woke up it was still raining. And it rained for ten more days and ten more days and ten more days and ten more days.

Megan freaked out.

“Eighty days!”

“Eighty days!”

“Eighty days of rain!”

“No sunshine.”

“I have moss in my hair.”

“I have mushrooms in my ears.”

“Snails on my bicycle.”

“I need a desert.”

“I need sunshine.”

“HELP!”

Megan’s mother went upstairs, crawled under Megan’s bed and went to sleep and hoped it would stop raining.

“I don’t believe it” said Megan.

She went downstairs, played with her blocks all day and went to bed. Then the next day she woke up and there was something shiny in her face.

“Get that flashlight out of here” said Megan.

There was still something shiny in her face.

“Turn out the lights” said Megan.

There was still something shiny in her face.

“I want to go to sleep” yelled Megan, and she opened her eyes and saw sunshine.

“SUNSHINE!” said Megan. “Sunshine after eight-one days!”

Megan opened up her window and there was a rainbow, a big rainbow. It went all the way across the sky and Megan said “I’m gonna find the end of this rainbow. I’m gonna find the end of this rainbow because there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”

She ran out the backyard, jumped over the fence, jumped over three cougars, two wolves, one bear and finally came to the end of the rainbow right under an enormous Douglas Fir Tree. There was no pot of gold.

Megan dug and dug and dug in the ground and there was still no pot of gold. “Nuts” said Megan.

She looked back the other way, and from far, far away saw the end of the rainbow going into her very own bedroom window.

“Ahhhh!” said Megan, “I should look under my bed”.

She ran all the way home, jumped over two wolves, one cougar, three bears, the back fence; ran inside, ran up into her bedroom, looked under the bed and there was her mother, fast asleep.

“Oh dear!” said Megan. She stood in the middle of the bed with the rainbow coloring her head and yelled “MOMMY!”

Her mother stuck her head out from under the bed and yelled “Get that flashlight out of here!”

“SUNSHINE!” yelled Megan.

“Turn out the lights” said her mother.

“SUNSHINE” yelled Megan.

“No fires inside!” yelled her mother.

“SUNSHINE – LOTS OF SUNSHINE!” yelled Megan.

“Get that flashlight out of here” yelled her mother.

Megan jumped up and down on the bed and yelled “A RAINBOW! A RAINBOW! MOMMY, THERE IS A RAINBOW!”

Megan’s mother crawled out from under the bed and said “Wow! A Rainbow!”

“Isn’t is neat.” said Megan “All we need now is a pot of gold.” “S

illy” said Megan’s mom, looking at Megan shining in the rainbow light “You are the pot of gold!”

And Megan’s mom gave Megan a rainbow shining hug.
