For Katherine, who moved from Hawaii to Eugene, Oregon.
(She is also in the poem 'SNOW CONE')
I lived once in Hawaii,
And that was just fine with me.
The weather there was always nice!
It scarcely rained, you see.
But now I’m here in Eugene
There’s rains and fogs amongs us.
You won’t believe the things I’ve seen!
The slugs, they are humongous!
And this thing upon my head?
I think that I shall soon be dead
Because it is a fungus.
It started growing in my ear
And grew up on my head.
My mom says we might go back
But only if I’m dead.
So goodbye to Hawaii.
Goodbye to sandy beaches.
In Oregon I’ll have to swim
With frogs and slugs and leaches.
